Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Biology (www.ecu.edu/biology) is a comprehensive department that emphasizes an integrative approach to the study of the life sciences. We offer undergraduate majors in Biology and Biochemistry and graduate opportunities at both the M.S.and Ph.D. levels.
The Department of Biology supports more than 1,200 undergraduate Biology and Biochemistry majors and has a diverse, interdisciplinary faculty and growing doctoral and masters graduate programs that will soon be housed in a new, state of the art Life Sciences and Biotechnology building.
Department of Biology resources, which support both research and instruction, include expertly staffed core facilities for microscopy, molecular, genomic, and water chemistry analyses, and high-performance computing and plant growth facilities.
Job Duties:
This staff member will manage labs associated with two large enrollment microbiology lab courses (BIOL 2111-Fundamentals of Microbiology Lab and BIOL 3221-Microbiology). We offer approximately 18 sections of BIOL 2111 (288 seats) and 4 sections of BIOL 3221 (64 seats) during the fall and spring semesters and approximately 3 sections of BIOL 2111 during the summer session.
This staff member is needed to 1) maintain the lab (which needs to be restocked multiple times/day and order lab supplies weekly) and prep rooms with adequate supplies for the instruction of all the sections referenced above, 2) conduct weekly training of teaching assistants, 3) be available and reachable by teaching assistants to assist during labs when needed, 4) maintain classroom technology - including maintenance and organization of class Canvas sites, 5) report student issues to instructor of record, 6) provide access to safety equipment in each lab, 7) properly collect and dispose of chemicals and hazardous waste produced in the sections, 8) maintain lab equipment, and 9) maintain ECU EH&S lab safety protocols in all teaching and prep areas.
Additional Duties Include: Equipment/Supplies Maintenance, Lab Safety. The staff member will be able to be trained to operate basic lab equipment; hot air convection ovens, steam sterilizers/ autoclaves, PCR, thermal cyders, water baths, coolers, freezers). The staff member will maintain the laboratory and classroom to meet University, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelors degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Working knowledge of introductory biology, microbiology, EH&S, and prospective health training is preferred. Chemical Safety (Hygiene Quiz) is preferred.
