Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) performs waived, moderately and highly complex laboratory tests as defined by CLIA on patients of all age groups. Performs laboratory procedures correctly, timely, independently and accurately, following established policies and procedures to achieve 100% compliance with Quality Control protocol for running controls and accepting results. Performs instruments maintenance, maintains supply inventory, resolves problems and complaints, and communicates effectively with physicians, co-workers and laboratory management.
Performs laboratory procedures correctly and accurately, following established policies and procedures.
Verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.
Frequently reviews Outstanding Specimen Report during shift and complete those outstanding tests that should be completed.
Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory computer system regarding ordering, reporting, and verifying results and downtime computer procedures.
Performs quality control and maintains records, with 100% compliance following QC protocol for running controls and accepting results. Exercises good judgement and proper interpretation of QC data and patient test results, and assumes responsibility for decisions. Communicates all QC problems to management.
Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab values. Adheres to the Critical Values Reporting guidelines.
Maintains necessary written records and oral communications. Documents corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory?s acceptable guidelines.
Performs and records instrument maintenance properly and in a timely manner.
Troubleshoots instruments and demonstrates knowledge of calibration and standardization of instruments.
Maintains supply levels in their department and communicates all inventory problems to management. Communicates/follows up on all unclear discrepant orders, problems, concerns, and/or results.
Applies criteria for specimen rejection by performing visual inspections or by recognizing abnormal/unusual results.
Responds promptly and correctly to all requests, (stats, timed, etc.) problems, and questions from those in need of help.
Offers assistance and promptly responds to requests (patients, physicians, nurses, co-workers and others). Is aware of overall needs of laboratory and willingly performs assignments outside the scope of his/her job description to accommodate them.
Selects and uses Personal Protective Gear appropriately. Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols.
Satisfactorily performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor?s degree in biological science, chemistry, medical technology or related science required.
Masters Degree, in biological science, chemistry, medical technology or related science preferred.
Experience:
New grad to two years of relevant clinical experience, required.
License:
Current CLS licensure in the State of California, required.
