The laboratory of Agnieszka Lukaszewicz, in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School, is seeking a highly motivated senior research laboratory technician. The laboratory studies germline de novo mutations, with a focus on: (1) spectrum of de novo structural and copy number variants at meiotic DNA double-strand breaks in mice and humans, (2) determining molecular mechanisms driving de novo mutations in meiosis, (3) determining the impact of structural variation at recombination hotspots on genome stability.
This is an excellent position for a recent college graduate interested in gaining a few years of research experience before applying to graduate school. The position is thus an excellent opportunity to have regular and direct hands-on training from a PI and determine whether they are interested in pursuing a graduate degree.
The position is heavily focused on laboratory research, with a smaller amount of effort devoted as the lab manager for laboratory support/maintenance.
The selected applicant will be involved in well-defined research projects and is expected to make original scientific contributions, as well as interpret and analyze results. The position will heavily focus on mouse molecular genetic techniques.
Experimental responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Designing and performing PCR assays
Mouse husbandry
DNA extraction, subcloning, and genotyping
Library preparation for next generation sequencing
Fluorescence microscopy
Data analysis using a variety of software programs
Preparation of data for presentation
Training of new lab members and functional supervision for undergraduate students
Non-experimental responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Purchasing of lab supplies and equipment as authorized
Managing lab safety program and compliance with animal protocols
Maintenance of lab equipment
Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or a related area of study
1 year of undergraduate wet lab research experience
Willingness to work with mouse model system
Experience with PCR assays
Experience with DNA extraction
Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety protocols including biological and chemical safety
Ability and motivation to learn new experimental approaches and safety protocols, and analyze and present data
Excellent teamwork and communication skills
2 years or more of undergraduate laboratory experience
